Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (NU-CUES©)

Empowering Parents to Understand and Support Uncertain Situations

Is this some of your story?

Does your child find it hard to cope with uncertainty?

Do unfamiliar situations trigger worry or fear?

Is your child anxious about things before they happen?

Do they avoid activities because they’re unsure what to expect?

Do you find yourself avoiding situations to protect your child from anxiety? Is your world feeling smaller because of these challenges?

Is this affecting your family’s wellbeing and daily life?

What is NU-CUES?

NU-CUES©, co-designed by parents and Newcastle University, this parent-based group programme focuses on the recognition, understanding and management of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) for autistic children.

Coping with Uncertainty in Everyday Situations (NU-CUES©) is specifically designed to help parents and caregivers of autistic children (aged 4 - 16) who experience anxiety related to uncertainty.

Participants will learn effective strategies over eight weeks in a supportive environment.

NU-CUES: What you'll gain

  • Understand what intolerance of uncertainty (IU) is and recognise how it shows up in your child’s everyday life — in both the big moments and the small, easy‑to‑miss ones.

  • Identify 2–3 real situations where your child finds uncertainty hard, and use these as your focus for learning and practice.

  • Use at least three supportive strategies to help your child manage uncertainty and gradually build their tolerance over time.

  • Notice less helpful coping patterns your child uses when things feel unpredictable and gently reduce reliance on them in a compassionate way.

  • Create a personalised toolkit of 4–6 flexible strategies that you can use across many different uncertain or changing situations — not just the ones you started with.

  • Feel more confident supporting your child and see them beginning to use their growing tolerance of uncertainty in a wider range of everyday moments.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Can I use my child’s Australian NDIS funds?

Yes! You can use NDIS Category Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living Parent/Carer Training (Line item 15_038_0117_1_3).We’re happy to help you explore your options and provide supporting documentation.

Does my child need to be diagnosed?

No formal diagnosis is required. NU-CUES© is designed for parents and caregivers of children who experience anxiety related to uncertainty—whether or not they have a formal autism diagnosis. If your child struggles with unpredictable situations, transitions, or unfamiliar environments, this program may be a helpful fit.

What happens if I miss a session?

We understand that family life can be unpredictable. If you miss a session, we’ll do our best to support you with:

A summary of key strategies covered in the session

Access to any handouts or resources shared

Optional check-in support to help you catch up gently

NU-CUES© is designed to be flexible and supportive. You won’t be left behind, and there’s no pressure to “keep up”—just encouragement to engage in ways that work for your family.

What’s the difference between the Sunday and Thursday sessions?

Both options offer the same NU-CUES© program—same content, same facilitators, same supportive environment. The only difference is timing, so families can choose what works best for their schedule. You’ll stay with the same group for all 8 weeks, so once you choose your preferred time, that becomes your regular session. If you’re unsure which suits your family best, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help you decide.

Will families be grouped by similar child ages?

We do our best to group families whose children are in similar age ranges. However, because group sizes are small and session times vary, it’s not always possible to match ages exactly.

What we can promise is a warm, respectful space where every family’s experience is valued—and where strategies are tailored to your child’s developmental stage.
